I am a adoptive mom to two daughters, one has 4c hair and the other has maybe a 2b or so. So much products and techniques but both girls have issues sitting for a long time. The one with 4c hair, is a real struggle, she doesn’t care how it looks. She is at that age, where hygiene care, is not very good.

When my son was about 4 years old, he asked “Do I have a Guatemala daddy?” [Mom fail!] It opened the conversation and I now remind my adoptive family clients to talk about birth fathers even if we don’t know much about them. He also went through a stage where he was convinced that his “Guatemala daddy” was an “Army man”. I knew from the social worker report that he was probably not but I would just say “I know he worked in a factory but I’m not really sure what else he did.” He’s now 14 and doesn’t say much about his birth family but I feel like we laid a foundation for him to be proud of his first family.

I wish we had started earlier. We adopted our son at birth when we were 45. Now, at age 9, he has already lost 3 grandparents, the first when he was only 6 months old.

This is a fantastic article. I always wished that I could crawl inside my son’s brain and see what he is thinking. I am going to give him a copy of this letter and hope that it can start some more dialogue. If not, that’s ok! Reading thoughts from other kids will hopefully support him on his life’s journey.
